Cookie Policy

This page explains how TLDR uses browser storage technologies. We are committed to transparency about data stored on your device.
1. We Do Not Use Cookies
TLDR does not set any HTTP cookies. We do not use any third-party cookies, tracking pixels, or advertising services.
2. localStorage Usage
We use your browser's localStorage (a built-in browser storage mechanism) for the following strictly essential purposes:
- Authentication token (JWT) — stored under the key
token. This keeps you logged in between page visits. It is removed when you log out. - Language preference — stored under the key
locale. This remembers your chosen language (English or Spanish) between visits. - Storage notice dismissal — stored under the key
storage_notice_dismissed. This remembers that you've acknowledged the storage information banner.
3. ePrivacy Exemption
Under the ePrivacy Directive (2002/58/EC, as amended by 2009/136/EC) and the Spanish LSSI, storage that is "strictly necessary" for a service explicitly requested by the user is exempt from consent requirements. All storage used by TLDR falls under this exemption:
- Authentication tokens are necessary to maintain your logged-in session.
- Language preferences are necessary to deliver the service in your chosen language.
Because we only use essential storage and no tracking technologies, no cookie consent banner is required. We instead provide an informational notice about what is stored.
4. Anonymous Analytics (No Cookies)
We use Umami, a self-hosted, privacy-friendly analytics tool, to understand how our service is used. Umami does not use cookies, does not track users across websites, and does not collect any personal data. It collects only anonymous, aggregated statistics such as page views, referrer URLs, browser type, and country. Your IP address is used solely to determine country and is not stored. Because Umami sets no cookies and stores no data on your device, it is exempt from consent requirements under the LSSI (Art. 22.2) and the ePrivacy Directive. No data is shared with third parties for advertising purposes.
5. How to Clear Storage
You can clear all TLDR data from your browser at any time through your browser's settings (usually under "Clear browsing data" → "Local storage" or "Site data"). Note that clearing the authentication token will log you out.
